Fuji .049 series

Between 1950 and 1970 the Japanese Fuji range included a series of small glow-plug motors in the .049 cuin. displacement category. Fuji were in fact among the very first Japanese manufacturers to become involved with this then-new displacement category, which had been "imported" from America by model enthusiasts among the US service personnel then stationed in Japan following the conclusion of WW2.

By far the best-known member of the Fuji .049 series is the final model illustrated at the left, which was in production throughout the 1960's. This was the only Fuji .049 model to be widely distributed to world markets, hence being sold in considerable numbers worldwide. As a result, it is by far the most frequently-encountered variant of the engine today.

However, what appears to be far less well-known is the fact that this model was preceded by no fewer than 7 distinct variants displaying significantly different design attributes. Several of them were somewhat experimental in nature and did not last long, hence their present-day rarity.

In addition, the final three variants also appeared in over-bored versions having displacements of 0.061 cuin. (0.998 cc). These units too are far less well-known than they deserve to be.

A detailed article tracing the introduction and evolution of the Fuji .049 and .061 models appears elsewhere on this website.
