E.D. Greenhead Racer

The Greenhead version of the iconic E.D. 2.46 cc Mk. III Racer  was a reed valve variant of the original disc rear rotary valve (RRV) version of the engine which first appeared in 1951. It was developed beginning in 1954 purely because its fuel consumption was considerably lower than that of its disc-valve companion, making it far more suitable for control line team racing. It offered no performance advantages over the standard RRV model. The first factory-made examples appeared in 1956.

The reed valve Racer scored some impressive if somewhat unheralded results in the field of Class A team racing. It was particularly successful on the Continent, where it continued to put up competitive contest performances at the international level well into 1956 despite the formidable opposition presented by the Oliver Tiger Mk. III. Despite these successes, it was never advertised by E.D., nor was a test report ever published. By E.D. standards, the number produced was quite small.
