The Strato range consisted of a series of high-quality model engines produced in Montreal, Canada in very small numbers between 1940 and 1947. They were constructed by Montreal resident Randall Bainbridge, who had been born in Tynemouth, England in 1913 but relocated with his family to Quebec when he was 12 years old.
All of the Strato engines were 0.604 cuin. (9.90 cc) units. The four successive production models, of which some 80 examples were made in total, were all side-port spark ignition units. Bainbridge also made two front rotary valve (FRV) sparkies as well as a single example of a fixed compression diesel. Neither the FRV model nor the diesel version ever saw series production.
The Strato engines were individually produced to extremely high model enginering standards. However, Bainbridge found that he was unable to compete with the far less expensive mass produced engines of equivalent displacement being manufactured in the USA during the early post-WW2 period. Sadly, this caused him to abandon the model engine field in early 1947.
